West Lancs Yacht Club 24 Hour Race 2025

The West Lancashire Yacht Club’s 24 Hour Race is a legendary UK sailing event held annually on Southport’s Marine Lake. Since 1967, it’s tested teams’ skill and endurance in a non-stop relay from Saturday noon to Sunday noon. Dinghies like GP14, Enterprise, and Firefly race laps, with sailors rotating shifts through day and night. It’s a vibrant community affair with camping, barbecues, and live music.

The 2025 race, the 54th edition, ran September 13-14. Teams arrived Friday for setup and a lively pre-race party. Early bird entries started at £330 per team, with discounts for additional club entries. The event welcomed affiliated clubs and university alumni, fostering inclusivity. A junior 12-hour race ran alongside, won by Budworth Sailing Club, followed by Toddbrook and Winsford Flash.

This year, the National Firefly Association (Firefly Sailing) dominated, securing a well-deserved victory. Team captain Jenny praised their flawless coordination and tactical sailing in tough conditions. It marked the third win for a class association, highlighting the Firefly’s agility. All teams showed incredible passion, making the race unforgettable.

The race uses a handicap system to level the playing field across dinghy classes. Penalties apply for rule breaches, like improper course navigation or handovers. A “Masters” category for helms over 40 adds multi-generational appeal. Despite past challenges like COVID cancellations, 2025 saw a strong comeback, with the Firefly class returning after a hiatus.

Spectators enjoyed food stalls, a marquee for wet gear, and bars with craft beers and non-alcoholic options. The family-friendly vibe drew hundreds to cheer lakeside. I captured the action through my camera, and the organizers loved the photos so much they invited me back as an official photographer for 2026.

The West Lancs 24 Hour Race is more than a competition—it’s a celebration of teamwork and sailing spirit. Whether you’re a sailor or a fan, it’s a must-see. Check the West Lancs Yacht Club website for 2026 details. See you on the water!
